Is your skin dry or dehydrated?

Most of us use some kind of moisturizer but are you using one with the right ingredients for your skin?

skin-whitening-forever-93Dehydrated skin is considered a skin condition, usually brought on by external elements like the weather, pollution and questionable lifestyle choices such as over exfoliating or two too many cocktails! Luckily for us dehydrated skin can be improved!

Dry skin is genetic. Dry skin is also a skin type and the reason you have it is because you don’t produce enough natural oils.

Both of these conditions damage your natural lipid barrier which means your skin is compromised and open to infection, irritation and inflammation which means accelerated aging!

So what can you do?

Dehydrated skin is experiencing Transepidermal Water Loss or TEWL This is essentially moisture evaporating from your skin! However, you still have natural oil production which you can usually see on your nose around 3:00 pm!
What you need are Humectant ingredients to help your skin hold onto water.

Contains Hyaluronic Acid, ‘nature’s moisture magnet’ — an ingredient that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

Humectant ingredients to look for;

  1. Hyaluronic Acid usually called Sodium Hyualuronate on an ingredient deck- This ingredient is clinically proven to help the skin retain water while also absorbing 1,000 times it’s own weight in water to you skin!
  2. Glycerine
  3. Lactic Acid
  4. Panthanol or Vitamin B5
  5. Beta Glucan
Contains beta glucan and so many other amazing ingredients!

Dry Skin doesn’t produce enough oil, so the #1 ingredient you should be looking for is, you guessed it, oils! Look for ingredients in your moisturizer that are Occlusive which prevent moisture evaporation and Emollient, which smooths skin by filling space between skin flakes with a droplet of oil. (source).

One of my personal favorite oils is Squalane Oil which is rich in lipids and essential fatty acids.

Oil/Lipid rich ingredients to look for;

  1. Ceramides
  2. Squalane/Squalene oil
  3. Jojoba Oil
  4. Argan Oil
  5. Polysterols
Contains RiceramideĀ® an exclusive blend of natural plant ceramides, lecithin, hemp oil and essential fatty acids
